WESTFIELD -- Elnor Margaret Biggs, 91, of Westfield, IL. passed away at 2:40 p.m. on Monday, June 8, 2015 at the Odd Fellow-Rebekah Home, Mattoon, IL. She was born on September 30, 1923 in Grovertown, IN., the daughter of Dr. Otis I. Uncapher and Mable W. Craig Uncapher. On January 1, 1942 she married Doit Leonard Biggs in Lafayette, IN. He passed away on September 10, 2011.
Survivors include her sons, David D. Biggs and wife Terri of Westfield, IL. and Robert D. Biggs and wife Deborah Sims of South Lee, MA.; four grandchildren and seven great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband; daughters, Elnor Jane Biggs and Lee Ann Biggs; brother, I. Craig Uncapher and sister, Helen Uncapher Arndt.
Elnor graduated from Lafayette Jefferson High School in Lafayette, IN. She attended Indiana Central College in Indianapolis, IN. where she met Doit L. Biggs. Their college plans were interrupted by World War II, Elnor and Doit married and moved to Westfield, IL. to manage the family farm. After the death of her young daughter Lee Ann in 1968, Elnor returned to college to complete a Bachelor of Art in Education degree. She was a volunteer at the Tarble Arts Center at Eastern Illinois University where she served as a docent. Mrs. Biggs taught for the Casey School District from 1971 through 1977. She was a co-owner of an arts and crafts store in Casey, IL. called Art Etc. Elnor was instrumental in re-introducing the Boy Scout of America program to the Westfield, IL. area. She served as a Cub Scout den mother. Elnor and Doit were active square dancers and met many friends in the central Illinois area. Elnor was a devoted member of the Westfield United Methodist Church, where she taught Sunday school, Bible school and helped with many church activities. In recent years, Elnor and Doit sponsored projects to preserve and display the old Westfield College church bell and to restore the 1917 pipe organ at the church.
Funeral services will be conducted at 10 a.m. on Friday, June 12, 2015 at the Westfield United Methodist Church with Rev. Walter Miller officiating. Burial will follow in the Washington Street Cemetery, Casey, IL. Visitation will be held from 4 to 7 p.m. on Thursday evening at the Westfield United Methodist Church, 225 S. Madison St., Westfield, IL.
