Morris Cheston, 87, retired senior partner of Ballard, Spahr, Andrews and Ingersoll and former chairman of the board of managers of Pennsylvania Hospital, died Friday at his home in Chestnut Hill after a long illness. Born in Philadelphia, Mr. Cheston graduated from Chestnut Hill Academy in 1921, from Princeton University in 1925, and from the University of Pennsylvania Law School in 1928. He joined the law firm of Ballard, Spahr after graduation, becoming a partner in 1934. For many years he served as a director of Smith, Kline, Beecham; the Provident National Bank and the Mutual Assurance Company. He was a manager, then chairman of the board of Pennsylvania Hospital, the nation's oldest. He was associated with the hospital for 40 years, serving 12 years as its chairman. Mr. Cheston also served as a vestryman and rector's warden at St. Thomas Church in Whitemarsh, where he was a member for almost 60 years.
A longtime member of the Quaker City Farmers, for 48 years Mr. Cheston owned and operated Whitpain Farm, a dairy farm that traced its roots form one of the earliest land grants in Whitpain Township, Montgomery County. An active horseman all his life, Mr. Cheston also was a director of the Devon Horse Show and Country Fair and president of the Radnor Hunt and Philadelphia Club. Mr. Cheston was a son of Radcliffe Cheston, a founder of Chestnut Hill Hospital and its first president, and of the former Eugenia Morris, a direct descendant of Anthony Morris, the first member of the Morris family to come to America. Anthony Morris was mayor of Philadelphia in the early 18th century. Mr. Cheston's wife of 60 years, Caroline Ashton Cheston, died four years to the day before her husband. He is survived by his son, Morris, Jr; daughters, Mary L. C. Hancock, Caroline M C Shipley, Elizabeth C Forster and Charlotte C Betancourt; 19 grandchildren ; five great-grandchildren, and brothers James and E. Calvert.
