The death at Sacramento early yesterday of Ruben Clarence Buck has been termed suicide by the Sacramento coroner's office.
The 26-year-old unemployed embalmer was discovered at 3:25 a.m. in a hotel room he had taken only minutes before, when a passerby heard screams and notified the police. He was dead on arrival at a Sacramento hospital.
Buck, who was to be tried in Judge Mertz's court today on charges of disturbing the peace and reckless driving, left no note. Found outside the hotel window was a bottle which had contained strychnine sulfate.
Reportedly, Buck was playing cards with friends at Galt Monday evening when he excused himself, saying he had to get to the drug store before it closed. He never returned.
Formerly he was employed in a local mortuary as an embalmer.
The charges were filed against him following a 90-mile an hour chase which he led police when they attempted to arrest him at the home of Michael Hoffer, 504 Harold st., who had complained of Buck;s disturbing his daughter. He was later arrested at the Spot Club on Highway 99.
A native of Streeter, N.D., Buck was a veteran of World War II and had lived in the Lodi district several years
He was the son of Mrs. Lydia Buck of Galt; brother of Mrs R. A. Koehn, Galt; Mrs. Howard Berry, Lodi; Mrs. Jack Nichols, Stockton; Mrs. Don L Nichols, Oakland; Robert R. Buck of the U.S. Army in Texas; and Wesley and Benjamin Buck and Mrs. Otto Dewald of Streeter, N.D.
