Robert Clay Gillespie was born in Clarkesville, Georgia, the oldest of Clay and Mary Inglis Gillespie's four children.

Bobby as he was called by family. Lived a short time in Miami Florida during the depression years. His father got a job with Eastern Airlines and moved the family back to Hapeville Georgia when Bobby was 10 years old. He graduated from Hapeville High in 1949. He met the love of his life, Sondra Weaver in High School and they married after graduation. He graduated from Georgia Tech and then entered the Army. He served overseas in Germany and received an honorable discharge. He was called to the ministry during a service at the Hapeville United Methodist Church. He graduated from Seminary College at Emory University and joined the North Conference of the United Methodist Church. He served 10 churches of the NGC, starting in Gray Georgia and ending his 57 year preacher career at the Wesley UMC in Evans.

Bob was adored by all of his congregations and made many life long friends through his ministry.

Bob and Sondra had three children, Carol, John and Adam.
