BEECH

June 8, 2015

Elwood Leslie Beech left this world on June 5, 2015, to join his loving wife, Margot, in the arms of the Lord. He was born in Listie, Pennsylvania, on February 27, 1927, to August G. Beech and Hulda J. Shaulis Beech. He attended Somerset Township High School, and, upon graduation in 1945, enlisted in the U.S. Army. He was sent to the European Theater at the end of World War II to serve in the Military Police. Sergeant Beech’s service continued in several capacities, including performing as a member of the 425th Army Band. Although initially chosen as a trumpet player, he also performed on baritone and sousaphone. While stationed in Bamberg, Germany, he met, became engaged, and married his loving wife, Margot, with whom he shared 66 ½ years of marriage. He attended St. Vincent College as a music major for one year, then was called again to serve his country during the Korean conflict. After his final discharge from the Army, he settled in Somerset, where he began his lifetime civilian careers in the retail food business and as a motion picture projectionist and theater manager. The major part of the former was spent with A&P and Giant Eagle. He was a projectionist at the Parkay and Governor Theaters and served as manager and projectionist at Cinema 219 and Palace Theater. Elwood and Margot loved to travel, and visited all 50 states and many foreign countries. They were both longtime members of the Somerset Church of the Brethren, and for the past 13 years have been members of St. Paul’s United Church of Christ. Elwood was a member of The Last Man’s Club of Berlin and a lifetime member of the American Legion and the Veterans of Foreign Wars.

In addition to his wife Margot, Elwood was preceded in death by his parents, his brothers Harold, Glenn, Russell, sister Sarah (Zarefoss), and grandson Jonathan. He is survived by sons Martin and his wife Donna of Kennett Square, and Eric and his wife Mildred of Rockwood; grandson Tyler and his wife Heather; grandson David; great- grandchildren Aleah and Brian Perry, Matthew Lepley, and Mickey Hauer.

Interment will take place at Memorial Park on Saturday, June 13, at 12:00. Military honors will be accorded by the Somerset County Honor Guard. Following interment, a memorial service celebrating Elwood’s life will be held at St. Paul’s United Church of Christ in Somerset at 1:00. Condolences may be made at millerfuneralhomeandcrematory.com. Contributions may be made in Elwood’s memory to Jonathan Beech Memorial Concert, 474 Greenwood Road, Kennett Square, PA 19348.
