Jonathan D. Wheeler was born in Guilford County, NC, the son of Manlove and Esther Wheeler. As a young man, he moved with his family to Schuyler County, IL. In 1846, he married Martha Jane Matthews with whom he had 12 children. His wife and two of the children, J.M. Wheeler of Flora and Mrs. Jacob Logan survive. A brother in Nebraska, one in Missouri and his twin brother, Manlove of Fandon, IL also survive. Funeral services were held at the Conservative Brethren Church in Flora followed by Interment in Asbury Cemetery.

Jonathan had seven siblings:
