Civil War Union Army Soldier. Soon after the Confederate bombardment of Fort Sumter, South Carolina in April 1861 started the Civil War, he enlisted in the Union Army, and was mustered in as a Private in Company B, 4th New Jersey Militia on April 24, 1861. He served a three month enlistment and was honorably mustered out on July 31, 1861.

He was then commissioned as a 2nd Lieutenant in Company C, 23rd New Jersey Volunteer Infantry on September 13, 1862. He was promoted to 1st Lieutenant on December 26, 1862, and to Captain and commander of Company C on April 18, 1863. He was honorably mustered out on June 27, 1863.

On March 24, 1890 his wife, Kate J. Severs, filed for a US Army Widow's Pension (Application #417,708, Certificate #339820 New Jersey).
