A native of Spartanburg, he was the husband of Tula H. Cothran and son of L. T. "Toy" and Louise Dodd Cothran.
He was a member of Bethel United Methodist Church, was vice president of Hammond Brown Jennings Furniture Company, and past president of the Piedmont Sertoma Club. He was awarded the Furniture South Award of Merit and the Outstanding Merchant Award for Broyhill Industries. He was a member of the city election commission, a graduate of Spartanburg High School and was a U.S. Army veteran of World war II having served in the Pacific Theater.
