Man Slays Aged Foe in Fist Fight
STRANG, Okla., Oct 7
Mayes county authorities early today were conducting a search for Paul Mitchell 37 years old, alleged to have fatally injured "Uncle" Steve Edwards, 76, as the result of trouble said to have been brewing in their respective families for several years. Officers said Edwards was struck four times by Mitchell yesterday while the latter's brother, Claude, held W. P. Brandon, a justice of the peace, who had attempted to intervene. Brandon said he heard Paul Mitchell tell the aged man, "I ought t. knock your head off," and had tried to prevent the young er man from striking Edwards. A cousin of the Mitch brothers, Henry Wymer, is Edwards' son-in-law, It was said trouble had been evident between the families for several years. Paul Mitchell returned to Strang recently after being away for six years.
Mitchell fled on foot. Claude Mitchell declared the killing was accidental. No charges were immediately filed.
