The son of Campbell and Jane Duty Hays, Hannibal Hays led a checkered life. He was married at least five times and fathered at least 11 children. He may have been the inspiration for the fictional outlaw Hannibal Heyes on the 1970s TV show Alias Smith and Jones.
He was also a Union Civil War veteran serving in Company A, 25th Indiana Volunteer Infantry.
