Cornelia Austin McPherson, a resident of Glenaire in Cary died Tuesday, June 20, 2006. She was born Florence Cornelia Austin on December 18, 1924 to Joseph Cervera and Mae Massey Austin of Rockingham County, NC.

In 1945, Connie received her Bachelor of Science degree from James Madison College in Harrisonburg, VA.

She is preceded in death by her beloved husband, William Primrose McPherson. Their companionship and love for one another endured for over 50 years until his death in 1998.

For more than 20 years, Connie taught Home Economics and Special Education in the Wake County Public Schools. Upon her retirement in 1986, she was president of the Beta Chapter of Delta Kappa Gamma for two years 1988-1990.

In 1992, she was elected to Life Membership in the Women of the Church at First Presbyterian in Raleigh, where she was a member for 52 years. Upon her move to Cary in 2000, Connie joined the First United Methodist Church in Cary returning to the denomination of her youth.

An avid historian, she was a member of the Jamestowne Society, The Virginia Branch of the Huguenot Society of the Founders of Manakin in the Colony of Virginia, the Caswell-Nash Chapter of the DAR, and the Daughters of the Cincinnati. In 1997-1999, Connie was State President of the Magna Charta Dames and Barons.

She was a Sustaining Member of the Junior League of Raleigh and a long-time member of Carolina Country Club.

Connie is survived by her daughter, Helen Primrose McPherson Spence of Smithfield; and two grandchildren, William McPherson Spence of Raleigh, and Mary Helen Primrose Spence of Smithfield.

Following a private burial at Historic Oakwood Cemetery, a celebration of Connie's life was held in Dinwiddie Chapel in the Main Building on the Peace College Campus in Raleigh at 2:00 p.m., Saturday, June 24, 2006. Her family will receive friends following the memorial service.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Spray United Methodist Church, 803 Morgan Road, Eden, NC 27288; the McPherson- Primrose Scholarship Fund at Peace College, Attn: Development Office, 15 East Peace Street, Raleigh, NC 27604; or, the Cornelia Austin McPherson Memorial Rose Garden Fund at Glenaire Foundation, Attention: Sam Stone, 4000 Glenaire Circle, Cary, NC 27511.
