He was born on September 15, 1933 in St. Louis, Missouri the son of Victor and Clotilda (Backius) Melies, both of whom preceded him in death.
He was married on March 31, 1964 in Belleville, Illinois to Rita Marlene Cashel who preceded him in death on February 1, 2004.
He attended grade school at St. Boniface in Koeltztown, and graduated from St. John the Baptist High School in St. Louis. He served in the United States Navy during the Korean War. He worked for 24 years for the St. Louis Fire Department, retiring in 1979. He also owned and operated D & R Windows for 35 years. He was a member of VFW Post #8045 in Argyle and American Legion Post #317 in Freeburg.
He is survived by seven children: David Melies and wife Katie of Pacific; Scott Melies and wife Babette of St. Louis; Cheryl Barone and husband Vince of St. Louis; Patricia Bray of Ga; Patricia Nugent and husband Fred of Arnold; Dan Casey and wife Suzi of Arnold; and Sue Cucchi and husband Paul of Arnold; fifteen grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
Besides his wife and parents, he was preceded in death by one sister: Jo Ann Nugent.
Friends will be received from 11:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. on Friday, June 12, 2015 at St. Boniface Catholic Church in Koeltztown. Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 12:00 p.m. on Friday, June 12, 2015 at St. Boniface Catholic Church in Koeltztown, with Father Anthony Viviano officiating.
Burial with full military honors will be in St. Boniface Catholic Cemetery.
Expressions of sympathy may be made to St. Jude’s Children’s Research Hospital or the St. Boniface Endowment Fund.
