The son of David & Catherine (Myers) Cassel, in 1860 he was a laborer living with his family in Marietta, Lancaster County, Pennsylvania.

A Civil War veteran, he joined a group of men from Maytown, Lancaster County, and enlisted and mustered into federal service at Harrisburg April 26, 1861, as a private with Co. A, 10th Pennsylvania Infantry, and honorably discharged with his company July 31, 1861. He then enlisted in Marietta November 15, 1861, and mustered into federal service at Harrisburg February 28, 1862, as a sergeant with Co. B, 107th Pennsylvania Infantry. Promoted to 2nd lieutenant June 1, 1863, and to 1st lieutenant October 6, 1864, he honorably discharged at term's end February 2, 1865, but strangely is not found in the company register. He last enlisted and mustered into federal service at Philadelphia April 18, 1865, as 2nd lieutenant of Co. B, 215th Pennsylvania Infantry, and honorably discharged with his company July 31, 1865.

He married Anna Maria Dobson and fathered John David.
