Elmer was the son of Karl Eick and Louise Ludtke (Ludtke) His father died when he was 4 years old. His mother then married an Abraham Kent and he was raised by him. He had a sister Clara Eick and a half brother Abraham Kent.
He lived in Ottawa for many years but by 1942 he was living in Oak Park, Cook, Illinois
