Army Staff Sgt. Sanchez was assigned to the 1st Battalion, 68th Armor Regiment, 3rd Heavy Brigade Combat Team, 4th Infantry Division, Fort Carson, Colorado. Sanchez died of injuries sustained when an improvised explosive device detonated near his Humvee during combat operations in Balad. Alberto's family moved to Houston from Reynosa, Mexico, when he was an infant and he graduated from Milby High School. He chose to join the Army nine years ago so he could earn money for college tuition, but the military became his career of choice. He had previously served in Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, Korea but this was his first time in a war zone. He had been in Iraq for six months and was planning on celebrating his fifth wedding anniversary next month while home on leave.
