A 56-year-old Bedford County man died early Sunday after being struck by a car in the eastbound lane of U.S. 460 east of Bedford. State police said Alfred E. Acacey of Route 7, Bedford died at the scene of the 4:15 a.m. accident about a half mile east of Virginia 803.
His vehicle was in the traffic lane and he apparently was standing beside it when he was struck, police said. Acacey was knocked 170 feet into a ditch. A suspect vehicle was later found in a private driveway. No information on charges was available.

Dr. Alfred Edward Acey, age 56 of Route 7, Bedford, Va., died Sunday, August 4, 1991 from injuries received in a hit and run accident in Bedford Co. Dr. Acey was born in Norfolk, Va. on December 20, 1934, the son of the late Dr. and Mrs. Archie E. Acey. He received his elementary and secondary education in Va. public schools and entered Randolph Macon College in Ashland, where he received his Bachelor of Arts Degree in 1957. While serving in the U.S. Army he obtained a second Bachelor degree from the University of the Philippines in 1960. Upon his discharge of the army, he returned to Richmond and worked as a rehabilitation counselor for the Virginia Commission for the visually handicapped from 1961 through 1963 during which time he also obtained his MS degree from Virginia Commonwealth University. He entered the University of Maryland as a lecturer and doctoral candidate, receiving his Ed.D. Degree in Psychology. For most of his professional career Dr. Acey and his family lived in Ashland where he was involved in many civic organizations. He received an appointment as a member of the faculty of Randolph Macon College in 1967 and retired as full Professor and Chairman of the Dept. of Psychology in 1985. He was a member of the Main Street United Methodist Church in Bedford, Va. Dr. Acey is survived by his wife, Trixie Jenkins Acey, Lexington, Va.; a daughter, Kathryn Ann Moss and a grandson Donald Langston Moss, III; his sister, Anne D. Acey, Ferrum. Private graveside services will be conducted Thursday in the St. James United Methodist Church Cemetery in Ferrum by Dr. Carl Douglas and Rev. Godfrey Tate, Jr. The family requests no flowers and that memorials be made to the Randolph Macon College, Ashland, Va. or a charity of one's choice. Lynch Funeral Home, Rocky Mount is in charge of arrangements.
