Mary was the daughter of Benjamin and Sarah Allen. She married Alexander Coffin on Dec 9, 1857 in Cambridge, NY. They were the parents of Allen, Ruth, Albert, and Adelbert.

January 26, 1923 - Humboldt Republican - Mary Allen Coffin was born in Cambridge, New York, June 9, 1837, died at her home north of Bradgate, January 19, 1923, being at the age of 85 years, 7 months, and 10 days.

In her girlhood her parents moved to Ann Arbor, Michigan, where they lived for a period of 2 years, after which they returned to Cambridge.

The family of Benjamin and Sarah Allen consisted of one son and four daughters. All of whom have preceded Mrs. Coffin to the great beyond. She assisted in the home of Isaac Coffin where she met and married Alexander Coffin December 9, 1857.

The following spring this young couple emigrated to the West for the purpose of establishing a home. Many were the difficulties which this courageous young couple encountered. But nothing daunted their spirit and they erected their home in Wacousta Twp., Humboldt County, Iowa, far from railroad towns and settlers, and have lived there continuously until death called her home.

Four children were born to this union, all of whom are living but Adelbert who died in infancy. She identified herself with the Baptist church early in life and was a charter member of the Bradgate Baptist church, which was organized in 1882 and has been her church home since. She was a devoted mother and Christian. She was very much interested in the work of the Children's Home at Council Bluffs, responding willingly to the many calls which were made. At the time of the New Ulm massacre this family was the only one to remain at home. The rest of the settlers all fled to safety.

With the passing of Mrs. Coffin another pioneer of Iowa is gone. Mr Coffin died. August 28, 1920. Since that time Albert, her son, had been her main stay. The birthday circle of which she was one of three who had celebrated their birthdays together for the past 35 years is now broken.

Rev, Gryden her pastor, preached her funeral sermon. Text psalms 90, 9 and 10, "We spent our years as a tale that is told."

She leaves 2 sons and 1 daughter: Allen of Ames, Iowa, Albert and Ruth Marchant of Bradgate; six grandchildren and five great grandchildren; besides numerous relatives and friends who will miss her in the old home.
