EMPORIAN COMMITS SUICIDE

Mrs. Emma Hiatt, 73, took her own life by hanging herself in the basement of her home, 401 Constitution, about 4 o'clock Sunday morning. Mrs. Hiatt had been sick for several years and she had worried about her financial affairs.

The body of Mrs. Hiatt was found at 8 o'clock Sunday morning by Lee W. Wayman, cashier of the Emporia State Bank, who had been Mrs. Hiatt's financial advisor for many years. Mrs. Hiatt called Mr. Wayman at the bank at 3 o'clock Saturday afternoon, telling him she planned to leave town on a 4 o'clock train Sunday morning. She asked Mr. Wayman to go to her house Sunday morning, inspect the house to see if anyone was in any of the rooms and then lock up the place until her return.

Sunday morning Mr. Wayman went to the Hiatt home. He looked in all the upstairs rooms and as he was leaving, he noticed a light in the basement. He went down stairs and found the body of the woman hanging from a steam pipe. Mrs. Hiatt had lived in the basement, renting the upper floor rooms.

Mr. Wayman tried to call neighbors but was unsuccessful. He hurried to the county jail where he found Undersheriff R. M. Anderson. The men called Dr. C. E. Partridge, coroner, who said Mrs. Hiatt had been dead since about 4 o'clock.

Saturday Mrs. Hiatt telephoned her son, Dawson W. Hiatt, who lives on the old Hiatt farm, a half mile west of Soden's, telling him to bring Mrs. Hiatt and their small daughter, Doris to town. The son and his family came to Emporia about 6 o'clock and had supper with Mrs. Emma Hiatt. Before they returned to their country home, Mrs. Hiatt gave them dozens of keepsakes, pictures and small articles to take with them.

WRITES TO CHILDREN
Mrs. Hiatt also wrote letters to her five children, who live away from Emporia, and had a little neighbor girl, Bernice Baird, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Lynn Baird, 308 West Fourth, take them to the postoffice (sic). The woman gave Bernice a large pile of magazines Saturday night.

Mr. Wayman said that Mrs. Hiatt had been worried over a small mortgage on her property, but he said the amount was insignificant compared to the value of the house in which she lived and of the two other houses facing Fourth avenue on the same lot, which she also owned. Recently the 2-story rooming house had lost money, and at the time of her death, Mrs. Hiatt had no roomers at all.

Mrs. Hiatt is survived by six children, Dawson W. Hiatt, Emporia, and Mrs. Clinton Frye, Herbert J. Hiatt and Mrs. Don May, Portland, Ore.; Mrs. George Taylor, of Denver, and Archie E. Hiatt, of Rice, Wash. Eight grandchildren also survive, as well as a nephew, Charles Pearson, Emporia; a sister-in-law, Mrs. Ira Hinshaw, and a brother-in-law, Eli Hiatt, of Emporia.

LEAVES A WILL
In her will, opened today, Mrs. Hiatt made all bequests of $100 to the Fruitland cemetery, west of Americus, and the Cottonwood cemetery, west of Emporia, for "keeping up and caring for" the properties, and to Charles Pearson, the nephew. The remainder of the property will be used to create a trust fund, in which the eight grandchildren will share equally when they become of age.

Mrs. Hiatt left a note, pinned to her dress, when she died, in which she mentioned "poor health," directed the disposition of some personal belongings and gave directions for burial.

Mrs. Hiatt's maiden name was Miss Emma Jane Pearson. She was born August 8, 1857, in Ohio. She came to Lyon county with her parents when she was a child. She was married to Vernon Wedding, and after his death she married Sylvester Hiatt on July 13, 1879. They lived on the Hiatt farm, southwest of Emporia, until Mr. Hiatt died in 1897, when Mrs. Hiatt came to Emporia to live. She was a member of the Friends church.

Funeral services for Mrs. Hiatt will be held Thursday afternoon at 2 o'clock at the Roberts-Blue chapel. Interment will be in the Fruitland cemetery, west of Americus.
