He was survived by his father, Alfrey Bates; his wife, Maxine (Bolin) Bates of Burnside, Kentucky; his sons, Vernon Bates of Somerset, Kentucky and David Bates of Cincinnati, Ohio; his daughters, Wilma Bates of Cincinnati, Ohio, Sharon Bates of Mississippi, Linda Bates of Indiana, Carol Denham of Somerset, Kentucky, Barbara Denham of Somerset, Kentucky, and Shirley Mercer of Burnside, Kentucky; his sisters, Wilma Risch of Cincinnati, Ohio, Alta Bedinghous of Cincinnati, Ohio, Wanda Geannunzio of Mt. Clemons, Michigan, Loraine Duchatuea of Mt. Clemons, Michigan, Lola Hill of Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, Lena Flynn of Somerset, Kentucky, and Pauline Moody of Florida; several grandchildren; and a great-grandchild.
He was preceded in death by his mother, Josie (Winchester) Bates; and his former wife, Virgie (Davis) Bates.
Funeral services were held on Saturday, August 9, 1986 at Grave Hill Baptist Church with Reverend J.S. New officiating.
Pulaski Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
