The tombstone for Richard Eubank, who served as coxswain in the boat that took George Washington across the Delaware during the Revolutionary War. Located at Oakwood Cemetery in Richmond, it has an unusual history. It is carved out of a meteor the three sons of Richard’s grandson, William Shelton Eubank, dug out of Nunnary Hill in Churchill, Va. Initially, William Shelton had leveled the meteor off so that his wife, Rosa Lee James Eubank, could use it as a carriage step. Later his son, Beaufort Eubank, of Roanoke, Va., had the meteor reworked into a tombstone.
