Born Sept. 26, 1915, in Saline County, he was the son of the late Nathaniel S. Townsend and Addie Whittle Townsend. On March 6, 1942, he married Mary Christene Katemann, who survives. He had lived in the Arrow Rock community most of his life and retired from M-K-T Railroad after 37 years of service. He attended Zion United Church of Christ in Arrow Rock and in later years attended Cumberland Presbyterian Church in Marshall. He was a member of Arrow Rock Masonic Lodge No. 55 A.F. & A.M. for 62 years and was a U.S. Army veteran, serving from 1941 to 1944 in the China-Burma-India Campaign. While in the Army, he was an overseas horseshoe pitching champion. He was an avid outdoorsman/conservationist and loved hunting and fishing. He was a renowned championship checker player while in the Army and later around the state and county, especially on the boardwalk in Arrow Rock.
Additional survivors include a son, Terry W. Townsend and wife Linda of Marshall; a daughter, Christa Butchee and husband Kerlin of Austin, Texas; a grandson, Terry A. Townsend and wife Stacey; two great-grandchildren, Kellin and Haidyn Townsend; four nieces and several great-nieces and great-nephews.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by three brothers and two sisters.
