James H. Colmer, Sr., 89, of Pascagoula, Miss., passed away on May 12, 2013. He was born October 28, 1923 in Pascagoula and lived there all of his life except for periodic residence in Washington, D.C., and for the years he served in the U.S. Navy during World War II, in the course of which he attained the rank of lieutenant junior grade.
As an attorney, he practiced law for 50 years. He attended Millsaps College in the U.S. Navy V-12 Program; Naval Midshipmen’s School at Columbia University, N.Y., N.Y.; the University of Maryland; George Washington University, Washington, D.C.; and the College of Liberal Arts and School of Law at the University of Mississippi.
While practicing law, he served as city attorney of Pascagoula; city attorney of Moss Point; president of the Jackson County Bar Association; member of the Jackson County, State of Mississippi, and American Bar Associations; and member of the American College of Mortgage Attorneys. He also served as president of the Pascagoula Rotary Club, adjutant general of the Mississippi American Legion, member of the Pascagoula Library Board of Trustees, and advisory board member of the Magnolia Federal Savings and Loan Association.
During World War II, he served on a destroyer escort in the North Atlantic as the anti-submarine warfare officer and in the Pacific as the gunnery officer and executive officer.
He is preceded in death by his mother, Ruth Miner Colmer, his father, William M. “Bill” Colmer, and two brothers, Dr. William Colmer, Jr., and Thomas Warren Colmer.
He is survived by his beloved wife of 55 years, Margaret Spence Colmer, who was born in Scotland, a land he learned to love; two children, Mary Ruth (David) Allen and James H. (Jennifer) Colmer, Jr.; three grandchildren, Ian, Jack, and Spence Colmer, to whom he was greatly attached; sisters-in-law Gloria Moore of Meridian and Gwyneth Spence of Buckhaven, Scotland; and brother-in-law Jim Mitchell of Dunfermline, Scotland. He was proud of all members of his family.
A service celebrating his life will be held at his church, the First Presbyterian Church of Pascagoula, on Friday, May 17, 2013 at 11 o’clock with visitation an hour prior to the service. Heritage Funeral Home will be in charge of the service. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the First Presbyterian Church of Pascagoula or the American Heart Association.
