He is survived by his wife, Catherine Hassig Burns; one son, Rowland Michael Burns and his wife, Mary Kay; two daughters, Catherine Burns Bryan and her husband, Wesley, and Susan Elizabeth Burns and her husband, Kenneth Lemons; five grandchildren, Forrest Edward Burns, Thomas Andrew Bryan, John William Bryan, Catherine Magdalena Lemons and Matthew Ryan Lemons; one brother, Thomas Burns and his wife, Linda, of New Castle, Pa.; and sister-in-law, Martha Huskins, and her husband Donald, of Chattanooga, Tenn. He was preceded in death by his parents, Thomas Edward and Gladys Rowland Burns, and sister, Susan Elizabeth.
