According to the Bible he purchased once his family was in Arkansas, Jonathan Stout was born 28 January 1805, and according to his census responses over the years, this birth took place in Kentucky.

In the 1880 census, Jonathan said that his father was born in New Jersey and his mother was born in Pennsylvania. This adds to the likelihood that Jonathan is one of the many descendants of the well-known Richard and Penelope Stout of New Jersey.

One popular theory is that Jonathan is the son of David Stout who died in Mason County, Kentucky, in 1806. David Stout was born in New Jersey and married two of his cousins (who were both sisters), Amy and Rachel. With one of these wives he was known to have a son named Jonathan, but what happened to this son is unknown. (It is also not known whether either Amy or Rachel was born in Pennsylvania.)

The WikiTree article for Jonathan at https://www.wikitree.com/index.php?title=Stout-1246 has links to further reading on the Mason County Stouts. Other items that lend promise to this theory are that Jonathan named a son David and that Mason County is from an area of Kentucky that saw some migration to Floyd County. However, without further evidence, Jonathan's parents cannot be decisively named.

(This writer's father - a descendant of Jonathan - has autosomal DNA matches who descend from Richard and Penelope Stout. However, this could easily be a coincidence. When/if more of Jonathan's descendants test, though, we may finally be able to determine Jonathan's parents through triangulation.)

Jonathan's whereabouts are unknown in the 1810 and 1820 census, but on 28 April 1825 he married Margaret Hanna in Floyd County. The family moved with many other areas families to first Vermilion County, Illinois, then Washington County, Arkansas, where Jonathan lived in White River Township until his death. (Except, apparently, for a brief stint in Tennessee in 1837, according to his daughter Elizabeth's pension application.)

Jonathan and Margaret had five daughters followed by six sons: Elizabeth, Cynthia, Celia, Julian A., Keziah Jane, Samuel J., David S., John A., William, Jeremiah H., and James M.

Jonathan was a justice of the peace and officiated at the marriage of his daughter Elizabeth.

On the day of the census on 9 June 1880, Jonathan was listed as blind, his occupation crossed out. In the previous census, he was described as a wagon maker, and before that, a farmer.
