"Johannes Lorenz (1661 - ?) was born in the Palitinate area of Germany and married Anna Margaretha Heiliger (1672 - ?) on Feb 13, 1691 in Bellheim, Germany. They had 7 children who all came to New Jersey with their parents on the ship "Medford" in 1710. Their son, Alexander, at the age of 2, was baptized aboard the ship during the crossing. The spelling of the family name was changed to Lowrance upon landing in this country.

Alexander Lowrance (1708-1760) and his son John Lowrance (1740-1800) migrated to Rowan County, NC, and remained there for their lifetimes. John had 4 children, one of whom, William Lowrance (b. 8-21-1763 - d. 12-11-1852) volunteered and served in the Revolutionary War and then migrated to Owen and Henry Counties, KY. where he remained until his death.

His son, William Hamilton Lowrance (1813-1876) was born in Owen County, KY, married Druzilla Baker (1817-1893) and had 4 children, Richard Hiram, Greenbury, William and Harriet. In 1843 the family migrated to Honey Creek Township, Crawford Co., IL. William Hamilton and his 3 sons volunteered and served in the Civil War. All returned home safely. Richard Hiram, Greenbury and William married and their descendents form the 3 branches of the Lowrance (Lorance) families presently in this county."
