"DICKIE KEYEES DIES IN FREAK ACCIDENT"

A former Everett High School standout athlete died April 28, in a freak accident at Willocks Brothers Company, Inc., Foch Street, just off 129 By-Pass, Maryville.

Richard "Dickie" Keyees Jr., 19, son of Mr. & Mrs. Richard Keyees, 601 Tarpley St., Maryville, was killed as he and his co-worker, Harold Cogburn, Rt. 10, Maryville, were cleaning a concrete mixer at the end of the day's shift.

Keyees, who had been employed by the firm on a part time basis for about two years, entered the machine after turning its switch off, Cogburn told Blount County Coroner Roy White, who investigated the accident along with Sheriff Hugh Lee Crisp, Capt. Harold Barnebee and Deputy Larry Taylor.

Cogburn told the officers that he was thrown upward and then fell to the bottom of the mixer, injuring his left shoulder and leg. He also told that Keyees' crowbar hung in the machine's blades, locking them down and holding the man and bar against the machine's side.

Keyees, who was attending Electronic School of Knoxville, graduated from Everett High School in 1969. Active in sports, he captained the 1968 Everett football squad as halfback and was the team's offensive leader. He was named player of the week on separate occasions during the season and was named to the All-Conference team.

In addition to his parents, he is survived by sister, Karen, grandmothers, Mrs. Charles Keyees, Maryville, and Mrs. Hesbia Klapper, of Bristol, and his fiance, Miss Donna Wilson of Maryville.

Services were held Thursday, April 30 at Peck's Memorial Methodist Church with the Rev. Gene Kirk and Rev. Neville Hammer officiating. Interment was at Grandview Cemetery."

Richard was the son of Richard Eugene Keyees Sr., & Violet Leonard.
