Although his formal education only extended to the eighth grade, Gene was a successful farmer, community leader, and father. He married Betty L. Jacobs on May 5, 1954 in Plainville, Kansas and they were blessed with four children, Patty, Pam, Janet, and Randy.
Gene was always a hardworking, fun loving man. While spending most of his life farming and raising cattle, he started with the police force in 1968, serving for 25 years, with some of that time as the Chief of Police and ambulance service. He loved to travel, especially the annual trip to Oregon to visit his aunt and uncle. He loved hunting, fishing, and woodworking, could fix anything with Superglue, and was a wonderful gardener. But above all, he loved his family, and took every opportunity to play with his kids and grandkids. They truly were the joy of his life.
He was preceded in death by his parents Arthur and Edna May Axelson, sister Eleanor Holsman, sister-in-law Shirley Axelson, brother-in-law Robert Holsman, and great-grandson Race Adam Huenergarde.
Gene taught by example how to live honestly, love deeply, serve wholeheartedly, and have fun along the way. He leaves a legacy that will be remembered for generations to come.
