Groves Sharp Perkins, who went by the name of "Sharp," was the son of Hardin Perkins and Margaret Franks Hopkins Perkins (her first husband was William H. Hopkins). Sharp was born in Fincastle,, Henderson County, Texas, according to his death certificate. His father was buried at Fincastle Cemetery.

Married twice, Sharp's first wife was Lizzie Belle Wood, the daughter of Lewis Wood and Permelia Emaline Laney. They had three sons and two daughters, but only the boys lived to adulthood. Lizzie died 27 Sep 1906 and is buried in Baker's Cemetery. the children were: Maggie (1896-1896); Maude )1898-1898); Lewis Sharp Perkins (1899-1972); Ray Perkins (1902-1926); and Charles Wood Perkins (1903-1974).

Sharp's second wife was Mary Jane "Jennie" Driver Wood, the widow of Charles Emory Wood, who was the brother of his first wife, with whom Jennie had three children. Sharp and Jennie had two boys of their own: Willard C. Perkins (1916-1970) and Fletcher Paul Perkins (1918-1987).
