Phyllis Marie Boldt was born January 17, 1920 on a farm in Hamlin County, SD to Otto and Clara (Domagala) Boldt.

Phyllis grew up on farms and attended grade school at Cleveland Four in Hamlin County. She graduated from Bryant High School in 1939. Afterward, Phyllis lived in Chicago for a year. She moved back to South Dakota to attend Watertown Beauty Academy. After graduating, she worked in several salons, starting in Lake Preston as an apprentice before she qualified for her manager's license. Phyllis ran her own salon out of her home for many years, until she could no longer. At the age of 80, she was known as the state's oldest licensed practicing hair dresser. On December 7, 1947 she married James Bunker. The couple lived in Arlington, SD where they raised three children together. James passed away on September 6, 1981.

Phyllis was a devoted member of St. John's Catholic Church. She had many hobbies such as baking, sewing, gardening, reading and playing cards. Although, her favorite hobby was being a grandma as there was nothing she wouldn't do for her grandkids.
