Betty was born October 21, 1928, in Charlotte, N.C., the oldest of four daughters of Lawrence and Martha Hewitt Kelleher. Raised in Richmond, she graduated from St. Gertrude's Catholic School and later attended Dunbarton College in the District of Columbia. The friendships made during those years lasted her lifetime. Betty married Louis Franklin "Weenie" Miller on September 24, 1949, in Richmond. Together they raised six children in Lexington where Betty was an active member of St. Patrick's Catholic Church and many other school and community groups, particularly those involving her children. Not busy enough, Betty decided to go work for R.E. Lee Episcopal Church as an assistant to the pastor. She loved dealing with the college students she met in that position and followed her heart to a job in the dean of students' office at Washington and Lee University. Throughout Weenie's career in Virginia college athletics, Betty opened her heart and her home to team members and their families. Many of those athletes became an essential part of Betty's life and are now simply "family." When Weenie accepted the athletic director position at Hampden-Sydney College, Betty willingly returned to that campus and continued her open house, open heart approach to life. Betty and Weenie spent ten great retirement years in Virginia Beach, close to Betty's sisters, Barbara Lee and Adelaide. Betty loved being near the ocean and took great pleasure in introducing her many grandchildren to its beauty. Betty loved her books, and was never without a project, be it painting, researching family history, scrapbooking, or planning future family get togethers at the beach. Betty's kindness, graciousness, humor and wonderful smile will be missed everyday by her six kids, Chip (Patty), Tish (Mark), Markey, Charlie, David (Joan) and Danny (Anne). The summer visits to Lexington to see Betty strengthened the family bonds of the Miller cousins, Charles, Elizabeth, Michael, Rachel, Katherine, John, Tim and Sarah.
Betty was preceded in death by her husband, Weenie, and is survived by her sister Adelaide Neal of Virginia Beach, Louis "Chip" and Patty Miller of Singapore, Tish Miller and Mark Beaman of Austin Texas, Markey Miller of Austin, Texas, Charles Miller of Manasass, David and Joan Miller of Lexington, Dan and Anne Miller of Wayne, Pa., her eight grandchildren, and a loving extended family.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at Saint Patrick's Catholic Church at 2 p.m. on Friday, March 22, 2013, with Father Joseph D'Aurora officiating. Ashes will be interned at Stonewall Jackson Cemetery in Lexington, following the mass. Arrangements are being handled by Harrison Funeral Home & Crematory, Lexington.
