MILDRED KARO GOLDSMITH died Thursday in a Portland care center of complications arising from Alzheimer's disease. She was 85.

She was born Dec. 10, 1906, in Snohomish, Wash., but moved with her family to the Portland area as an infant. She was a graduate of Lincoln High School and attended Reed College. She worked as a stenographer before marrying Fred Goldsmith in 1947.

Mrs. Goldsmith assisted her husband in his livestock business and had been a volunteer tutor for the Portland School District. She served as president of the Portland chapter of Brandeis University's National Women's Committee and held several offices in Hadassah.

An accomplished bridge player, Mrs. Goldsmith won several awards and had the top score in the Oregon Bridge League's state championship in 1932. Her husband died in 1972.

Survivors include her son, Phil of Portland.

The family suggests that remembrances be contributions to the Temple Beth Israel social action fund, Robison Jewish Home or Reed College.
