Cheryl Marie Heers, 70, was born on January 24, 1945 to Paul and Augusta (Brockman) Heers. She passed away May 18, 2015 at Unity Point St. Luke’s Hospital after a lengthy illness.

A memorial service will be held Thursday, May 21 at 7:00 p.m. at Faith Lutheran Church located at 3101 Hamilton Blvd with Reverend Ralph Shorey and Reverend Henry Witte officiating. A funeral service will be held on Friday, May 22 at 10:30 a.m. at Faith Lutheran Church in Stanton, Nebraska with Reverend Terry Makelin and Reverend Timothy Booth officiating. Burial will be in St. Matthew Cemetery in rural Wisner, Nebraska. Meyer Brothers Funeral Chapel is in charge of services.

Cheryl attended grade school at District 45 in Stanton County, Nebraska, graduated from Pilger High School in 1963 and attended Wayne State College receiving both bachelor’s and master’s degrees.

Cheryl’s interest in teaching began at an early age as she held classes for her dolls in her playroom. Her first real teaching job was at Bryant School starting in 1970. She later transferred to Lincoln School and retired from there in 2009. Cheryl continued as a substitute for many years.

If not in the classroom, Cheryl could be found at church serving as an organist. She began playing the organ at age 15. She served at her home church, St. John Lutheran in Pilger, Nebraska.

On Sunday, June 15, 2014, Cheryl played for the morning service. On Monday, June 16, the church was demolished by the tornado! A highlight in her career as organist was playing the “Hallelujah Chorus” on the Holtkamp organ in Eppley Auditorium. Cheryl played at several churches including Faith Lutheran and Concordia Lutheran in Sioux City.

Cheryl’s other musical interest was playing bass clarinet in the All-American Concert Band, having joined in 1991.

She loved gardening in the summer and caring for the family home in Pilger, Nebraska. She loved to travel, Colorado and the ountains of the west being her favorite destinations.

Cheryl was a member of the Sioux City Education Association, Iowa State Education Association, and the National Education Association. She also belonged to Sioux City Retired Educators.

She is survived by sisters Elaine (Chuck) Golightly of Pismo Beach, California, and Yvonne Kutach of Sun Lakes, Arizona; niece Peggy (Mory) LaShier of Mesa, Arizona; cousins Ron and Celia Siecke of Pilger, Nebraska; and her best friend Geri Day of Sioux City. Furry friend “Chloe” was Cheryl’s much loved kitty.
Cheryl was proceeded in death by her parents, and her brother Richard.
Pallbearers for the Stanton service are: Ron Siecke, Ted Rieg, Leon Huisman, Doug Klaus, and Ted Neiman, all of Pilger.
