OBITUARY Iron River Reporter April 12 1989 "Obituaries: Clifford Carlson"
IRON RIVER-Clifford Carlson, 64, of 1030 W. Minckler St., died April 9 at Marquette General Hospital.
Mr. Carlson was born Sept. 27, 1924 in Iron River and graduated from Iron River High School in 1942. He first worked for the U.S. Forest Service in the fire watch towers and then in freighter shipyards prior to joining the Merchant Marines. At the age of 29, he was the youngest person in the United States to be commissioned a shipmaster in the Merchant Marines. In 1971 he married the former Sonja Werdich of Czechoslavakia and she preceded him in death on April 6, 1976. In 1982 he retired as shipmaster of the S.S. Tamara Guilden and then returned to Iron River. He was an avid outdoorsman, naturalist and conservationist. He was a member of the Iron County Historical Society and the Iron County Community Concert Association.
He is survived by his mother, Mabel Carlson of Iron River; a sister, Lorraine Meinhardt of Iron River; a niece and a nephew. He was also preceded in death by his father, Alex Carlson in 1967, and two brothers, Walter and Theron Carlson.
Visitation was held Tuesday, April 11 from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Brooks-Langenberg Funeral Home in Iron River.
Services will be held Wednesday, April 12 at 2 p.m. at the funeral home with the Rev. Clayton Parcels, pastor of First Presbyterian Church, officiating.
Burial will be in Resthaven Cemetery.
The family suggests memorials can be made to the Iron County Museum.
