Dr. Paul L. Abbott was born on Aug. 10, 1930 in Birmingham, Ala., and was called to be with the Lord on Friday, May 8, 2015.
Paul is survived by his wife, Bonnie; five children, Dawn White (Rick) of Foley, Ala., Mark Abbott (Carol) of Pittsburgh, Pa., Dana Nanni (John) of Henderson, Tenn., Rick Gehr (Misty) of Loxley, Ala. and Joy Myers (Matthew) of Birmingham, Ala. He also leaves behind his sister, Carol Lee; two nephews; 13 grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren and numerous lifelong friends.
He was well loved and respected by many.
Paul graduated from Birmingham Southern and University of Alabama at Birmingham Dental School.
Paul was a veteran of the Vietnam War, and retired as a captain from the United States Navy after 30 years of service. His years of service allowed him to see much of the world and facilitated one of his great loves in life — travel.
Upon retirement from the Navy, Paul joined a dental practice in Foley in 1978 and made this community his home for the next 37 years. He enjoyed playing golf with friends and spending time on the water.
Services will be held this Thursday, May 14 at Oyster Bay Baptist Church in Gulf Shores.
Visitation will begin at 9 a.m., with a service at 10:30.
Paul will be buried at Fort Barrancas, located at Pensacola Naval Air Station, Pensacola, Fla., with full military honors at 1:15 p.m.
In lieu of flowers, donations to Oyster Bay Baptist Church Building Fund may be made in his honor, 4280 Plash Road, Gulf Shores, AL 36542.
Arrangements are being handled by Pine Rest Funeral Home, Foley, Ala.
