A Memorial Service will be held on Friday May 22, at 1:00 pm at Buell Funeral Home in Springfield, Oregon for Howard Towne who died May 14, in his sleep. Howard was 89 years old.

Howard was born on April 1, 1926, in Princeton Kansas to Jay and Della Towne. His parents and family of three boys came to Oregon in 1930's and settled in Bend and eventually ended up in Oakridge. Howard went to school through the ninth grade, quit and went to work for the forest service. He met Mary in the 1940's and they married on July 21, 1946 in Bend, Oregon.

Howard spent one year in the U.S. Army in 1944-1945. He flew to Chiang King, China and traveled with a pack of mules east through China in search of POW's. In August of 1945 he returned to the states and married Mary one year later. They were married for 56 years until Mary's death in 2005.

Howard loved to work and became a successful logger, rancher, road-builder, carpenter and mechanic. He could be charming and funny. He loved working on heavy equipment, particularly caterpillars. He and Mary traveled to Mitchell, Oregon many times to the Cherry Creek Ranch. There Howard built roads for hunters.

Survivors include his two daughters, Carol Roush (Gary) of Springfield, and Joyce Towne of Cottage Grove, Oregon. Howard has two grandchildren, Shane (Erika) of Eugene and Morgan (David) of Portland. Howard has one great granddaughter, Jaiden. Howard is also survived by a brother Dale Towne (Nellie) of Sherwood.
