Raymond Behrends age 85, of Monticello, died at the Monticello Nursing and Rehabilitation Center, following an extended illness.

Funeral Services will be held 1:00 Saturday afternoon, May 31, 2008 at the Goettsch Funeral Home, Monticello, where friends may call after 11:00. Interment will be in the Oakwood Cemetery. Rev. Surviving are 2 children, a sister, 5 grandchildren, and 3 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, Dorothy in October of 1979, an infant son Timothy, and a son Carey in 1975, and a brother Lewis and a sister Berdina .

Raymond Richard Behrends was born March 26, 1922 at Monticello, Iowa. He was the son of Frederick and Anna B. (Schlemmer) Behrends. Raymond received his education in the Monticello Community Schools where he graduated in 1941. Ray then enlisted in the United States Marine Corps. He served in the South Pacific on Iwo Jima, Guadalcanal and Guam. He returned home and married Dorothy F. Dannemann on May 16, 1948 at the Wayne Zion Lutheran Church. Ray worked for Bert Loop as a truck driver. Raymond and Dorothy later operated a childrens clothing store called Little Tykes. In 1956 they closed the store and moved to Fullerton California. Ray worked as a drill press operator at a precision medical instrument factory called Beckman Instruments. He retired from Beckman Instruments in 1985. Ray returned to Monticello in August of 2006.

Ray loved to grow roses and possessed a great knowledge of horticulture. He often shared that with classes and tours he did at the Cal State Fullerton Arboretum. Ray was a rock hound through out his life often taking his children with him on his adventures. He also learned how to play the harmonica after he retired. In high school Ray set the Monticello record for the 180 Yard High Hurdles at 24.8 second in 1941. He was also known as a great ballroom dancer.
