My Grandmother,Annie Mae Riggins Otting, passed away from a major stroke. She had lingered for 18 months. I fondly called her "Granny".
Granny married Robert Jefferson Otting,Sr. They had 11 children in all. 3 died as infants. 5 more of the children passed away over the years. They include the sons: Robert Jefferson Otting Jr.,John Willis Ray Otting,Sr.,Jack Edward Otting,Elbert Otting, and Roy D. Otting. One daughter,Rosetta Otting Mathews passed away in 2000. 3 daughters now survive: Annie and June Otting, and Sadie Otting Ledbetter. Granny's brothers were: Willis,Henry, and James Riggins. Her sisters were: Dolly Riggins Hartzog and Edna Riggins Haven.
Granny was a housewife and a caregiver to her son,Robert Jefferson Otting,Jr.(R.J.),until her death. He was born premature. At 6 months old, he developed a high fever which left him crippled and unable to talk.
Granny enjoyed: working in her garden, especially her strawberry patch; growing beautiful flowers; canning and freezing her crops:enjoying listening to sacred harp music;and playing board games, especially with her grandchildren.
My fondest memories of Granny include: eating her fried apple pies, that she mostly prepared for family reunions and church homecomings;watching television with her; and playing Monopoly with her. She always had to play with the shoe as her playing piece. I guess you can say that Granny spoiled me a little,by letting me do some things at her house that my mother wouldn't let me do at home.
Granny lived in Rome all of her life. She was a member of Mount Olive Baptist Church. Her funeral was there at the church, with the Rev.John Carroll and the Rev. Willard Willis officiating. She was buried at East View Cemetery beside her husband. Granny is survived by her many grandchildren, great grandchildren, and great great grandchildren.
We all miss her very much.
