Actor. He will be best remembered for his voice work on countless animated TV series of Hanna-Barbera. Along with Mel Blanc, Stephenson was one of the busiest voice artists from the 1950s and 1960s. His father was a mortician, John participated in Speech competitions while in high school. He was studying at Northwestern University, when the United States entered World War II. As a result, he enlisted with the Air Force and served as a radioman and gunner aboard a bomber in Asia. He moved to Hollywood following the war and made a name for himself in radio, followed by TV and motion pictures. Perhaps, his best known work was his providing the voice of 'Mr. Slate', the boss of 'Fred Flintstone' in the TV series "The Flintstones" (1960 to 1966). Additionally, Stephenson provided narration work for the TV series "Dragnet" (1967 to 1969). Among his other credits include "Top Cat" (1961 to 1962), "Hogan's Heroes" "Scooby Doo, Where Are You?" (1969 to 1970) and many others. He is credited with over two hundred roles during the course of his career. He died of complications from Alzheimer's disease.
