Thomas Mitchell Abernethy was born at Balclutha in the Otago region of New Zealand's South Island on 23 March 1890. His parents were Rev. Christopher Abernethy (1845-1927) and Georgina Elizabeth Abernethy (nee Shorland) (1859-1906) who married in New Zealand in 1883 (reg. 1883/980). They lived at 363 Cambridge Terrace in Christchurch. Thomas was a cycle agent before he joined up during World War I with the New Zealand Rifle Brigade, 4th Battalion. He was killed in action at Havrincourt in France on 12 September 1918 and is remembered on the Grevillers (New Zealand) Memorial and Ashburton War Memorial. Thomas was one of three brothers who served during World War I. He and his brother 2nd Lieut. Kenneth Shorland Abernethy (No. WWI 14182) were killed. 2nd Lieut. Rex Clifford Abernethy (No. WWI 14185) survived (bio by Debbie McCauley, May 2022).
