Mr. Goodell was one of the Copper Country's outstanding citizens. He was public spirited and supported every worthy movement liberally. He also was a good friend of ex-service men, befriending them in all of their undertakings.
A son of the late Mr. and Mrs. R. R. Goodell was engaged in the Mercantile the, Copper Country, Mr. Goodell was born at Boston location on February 4, 1873, and spent his entire life in this district. He attended the Michigan College of Mines and the University of Michigan, and for a number of years was a member of the board of control of the Mining school, now Michigan Tech.
After completing his education Mr. Goodell was engaged in the mercantile business for a number of years as manager of the Painesdale store of the South Range Mercantile Co., and then entered into the gas and oil business, being one of the first independent distributors of these products in the Copper Country.
All through is life Mr. Goodell was interested in boating and sailing. For a period of years he was commander of the second Michigan battalion of the U.S. Naval Reserves, which included units at Hancock, Travers City and Marquette. As battalion commander he also was commander of the Yantic, training ship for the Naval Reserves, which at one time was used by Adolphus Greely in explorations in the Arctic regions. The vessel burned at a dock in Detroit some years ago.
After retiring from active duty in the Naval Reserves Mr. Goodell continued his interest in boating, owning during the succeeding years a number of cabin cruisers on which he spent much of his time in the summer months sailing on Lake Superior, especially in the vicinity of Isle Royale and the Canadian north shore.
Fraternally Mr. Goodell was a member of the Hancock Lodge of Elks and Alpha Delta Phi fraternity.
Horatio was married to Charlotte and they raised 4 children: Robert Wood Goodell, Charlotte Armitage Goodell, Francis Hubbard Goodell, and Ruth Ballard Goodell.
