He was born August 6, 1914 in Phil Campbell, Alabama, son of Thomas and Ella Carden Phillips. He married Ruth Dieckman February 24, 1943 in Mississippi and she survives.
Other survivors include three sons, Bill J. and John R. of Jacksonville and Thomas C. of Murrayville; four daughters, Mrs. Richard (Jacolyn) Hermes, Alexander, Mrs Don (Patsy) Covey of Evansville, Indiana, Mrs Don (Margaret) Mathews, Roodhouse, and Mrs Keith (Dixie) Pennell, Murrayville; nineteen grandchildren and one great grandchild; three brothers, Hoyt Phillips, Phil Campbell, Alabama, Marvin Phillips, Birmingham, Alabama, and Hubert of New Jersey; three sisters, Dicie Gowins, Gallatin, Tennessee, Lois Thomas, Fitzgerald, Georgia, and Gladys Hornsby, Phil Campbell, Alabama.
He was preceded in death by three brothers and three sisters.
