"John was born John Whitehurst in Virginia. In 1850 census he is living with his mother Mary Whitehurst 1808 Virginian a widow in Claiborne Co., Tennessee. By the 1860 census they move to Pulaski Co., Kentucky about the same time the Whitehurst (Whitis's) came to Pulaski Co., from Hawkins Co., Tennessee. In 1860 they are indexed as Whiters. Two of John's siblings are Sarah Trimble
