Donald Edward Auten, 76, of 95 Keefer Mill Road, died suddenly at his home on Sunday afternoon, Oct. 5, 2008.

A native of Montour County, he was born April 8, 1932, in Danville, a son of the late Peter C. and Viola Mae (Deiterick) Auten. He was married to the former Rose Marie Keefer, and his death breaks a marital union of more than 56 years.

Donald was a 1950 graduate of Danville High School.

He was a laboratory technician at Merck Pharmaceuticals, retiring after 25 years of service. Donald also was a farmer and was known to many as "the melon king."

Donald was a member of Mooresburg Presbyterian Church, serving as an elder at the time of his death and previously serving as a trustee, elder and Sunday school superintendent. He loved to socialize and swim at the Danville Recreation Center and was a charter and life member of the Liberty Valley Fire Company, for which he enjoyed making horseradish each year. He enjoyed hunting at the Leisure Land Hunting Camp in Driftwood, and he had been a member of the Danville school board and the Montour County Planning Commission.

Donnie can be remembered as enjoying driving his golf cart around his property, around Mooresburg and in many places in between. It served as his legs, allowing him freedom of movement.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by six children and their spouses, Donna and Donald Kreisher of Danville, Mary and James Cram of Danville, Joann and Daniel Deihl of Danville, Eugene and Cindy Auten of Danville, Barbara Nagurney of Middletown and Ruth and Paul Linder of Norcross, Ga.; 10 grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; one sister, Evelyn Jean Seifert of Houston, Texas; one brother, John Auten of Danville; and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by five siblings, Mildred Ferry, Robert Auten, Margaret Moorhead, Ruth George and Harold Auten, and one granddaughter.

Friends and relatives will be received from 9:30 to 11:30 a.m. Thursday at Mooresburg Presbyterian Church, followed by the funeral at 11:30 with his pastor, the Rev. John H. Shaw III, officiating.
