Jane was born 13 Nov 1847 in West Nissouri, Ontario, Canada to William ASHE (of Ireland) and Anna Maria MARKS (of England), daughter of Uriah MARKS and Susannah DIX.

Esther, a granddaughter of William ASHE wrote: “Father’s Father whose name was William Ashe was born in Armagh County about 50 miles north of Dublin, 1817. He married May 12, 1838 and died April 29, 1847, in Canada, near Uxbridge, Ont. He had gone away on horseback. They found him lying on the ground beside his horse, his clothing unfastened and his body bloated. He had this trouble some time before his death. He must have been quite young when he came to America.” [Letter curtesy of cousin David HART.]

Anna Maria was 2 months along with Jane when William passed. Anna Maria next married John ATWELL of Pennsylvania 30 Apr 1848 - Jane was about 5 months old. The family remained in West Nissouri. In following censuses, Jane and her siblings were listed as ATWELLs.

In later documents, Jane's maiden name is listed as ASH. She did not use ASHE.

Jane married Maurice “Morris” OTWELL (b. about 1845 in Kentucky to John Franklin OTWELL and Mary H. TAYLOR) in Perth County 13 Jul 1865. They lived in John F.'s household, a farm a few miles north-west of the ATWELL farm.

According to the 1910 census, Jane had 7 living children: William Charles (1868-1906), Edwin James (1871-1920), Mary Ellen HALEY (1873-1939), Edith PAGE (1875-), Ila May MCLEOD-YOUNIE (1877-1928), and Victoria Jane FREISLEBEN (1886-1972). The eldest child was likely John Franklin OTWELL (b. 1866), but there are few records indicating he was Maurice's brother.

In April 1889, Maurice was committed to St. Mary's Lunatic Asylum. Many of the children married and left home just prior to that event. Jane remained in Maurice’s father’s household in London until he went to prison in 1893. She then moved the family to Detroit where she worked in a boarding house. Upon retirement, she lived in her daughter Mary Ellen’s household. She died at home, age 87, on 23 Jan 1935 of lobar pneumonia after a 2 day illness and was buried in Oakview Cemetery according to her death certificate.
