Charles Jullian Erickson/Kalland was born to Charles D. Erickson and Sylvia (nee Kastonek) Erickson/Kalland on November 6, 1919. He had two sisters, Anna who died at 17 months, and Rose Marie (nee Erickson/Kalland) Padgett. Charles' father died on his 30th birthday in 1926. Two weeks later his mother married Harold Kalland. Charles and Rose Marie were thus raised by Harold Kalland who stepped in as their father. Harold however never formally adopted either child but both children assumed the last name of Kalland for the duration of their lives. I think it was just easier at the time to use Kalland to avoid confusion. Charles registered for the WWII draft December 12, 1942 but wasn't drafted so he enlisted in the Army on 10 Jan 1944. He was in a tank unit in WWII and received a Bronze Star. He was honorably discharged in 1946 with a rank of Sargent. In civil life he worked at the Moore Drydock Company as an electrician. He married Luella Mae Murchie May 12, 1940 in Wadena County, Minnesota, USA, Certificate Number M13-392. They moved to Almedia California some time before the war and raised their one son, Charles Perry Kalland.
