BALLARD –MARILYN B. PACKARD, 64, a lifelong resident of East Troy, went home to be with her Lord May 27, 2004, after a lengthy illness at Troy Community Hospital, surrounded by her loving family. Born July 27, 1939 in Sayre, she was the daughter of Marion Parmenter Ballard and the late Leon B. Ballard.

After graduating from Troy High School, she pursued a career in teaching, earning both her bachelor’s and master’s degree at Penn State. She taught home economics for a number of years in the Troy Area School District, where she soon earned the reputation of being a perfectionist. But teaching was more than a vocation for her. It was a mission. Her influence on young minds extended far beyond the confines of the classroom. For 45 years, she volunteered as the organizational leader of the East Troy 4-H Club, molding the characters of her young charges. She passed along her skills as a seamstress, and encouraged her club members to try their hands at a wide variety of projects. Her energy and enthusiasm were an inspiration to all. On June 17, 1961, she married her high school sweetheart, Richard Packard. Together they raised a son and two daughters. She was the quintessential helpmate to her husband, working side-by-side managing a herd of prize-winning Holsteins. The family enjoyed many cattle shows together. She served as advisor to the Bradford County Junior Holstein Club and received with her husband, the PA Holstein Association Hall of Farm Award and Bradford Co. Extension Service Cooperator of the Year award. In her spare time, she enjoyed music, quilting, and flower gardening. She was a woman with a deep, abiding faith in the Lord. It was an unshakable faith, which helped her to endure life’s most difficult circumstances. Memberships included a 53 year member of the East Troy Baptist Church where she served as organist, pianist, choir accompanist, and junior choir director; served many years as a Sunday school teacher; she also hosted many church gatherings and was every bit as mindful of young souls as she was young minds; was a member of the Gideon’s Auxiliary.

Surviving are her husband of almost 43 years, Richard, at home; mother, Marion Ballard, E. Troy; son David Packard, Litchfield, CT; daughters, Terri Packard, Litchfield and Amy Packard, Elizabethtown; brother-in-law, Don (Diane) Packard; sisters-in-law, Karen (Allen) Jones, Judy Hulslander, Joyce (Ralph) Kerrick; niece Samantha Hughes, nephew, Brent Hulslander, as well as several other nieces, nephews, and cousins.

She was preceded in death by her father, Leon B. Ballard and sister Linda Hulslander.

A time of fellowship was held at the East Troy Baptist Church, June 5. Visitation was held on June 6 at the First Baptist Church of Troy, followed by a celebration of her life; with her pastor Rev. Garry Zuber, officiating. A private interment will take place in Glenwood Cemetery. Professional services were entrusted to Morse and Kleese Funeral Home, Canton. Contributions in Mrs. Packard’s name may be directed to the Marilyn Ballard Packard 4-H Scholarship Fund, c/o First Citizens National Bank, 2 W. Main Street, Troy, PA. –Canton Independent Sentinel.
