Helen Lucille Larson died peacefully in her sleep on May 15, 2014. She was born in Winthrop on Dec. 4, 1925, to Daisy and Harry Morgan. Although the Great Depression made life hard for her family, she had many fond memories of her childhood as a tomboy in the Methow Valley. She graduated from Winthrop High School in 1943, where she was on the ski team and a member of band and pep band. She attended business school in Portland, Ore., and returned to work at the Farmers State Bank in Winthrop with her sister Lois.
It was there she met her husband, Jack, who had been in the parachute infantry during World War II and came to Winthrop to work for the U.S. Forest Service as a smokejumper. They were married Nov. 30, 1946, and Helen quit her job to raise her children. They eventually purchased land outside of Winthrop and went into ranching, where Helen also helped with the livestock and the field crops.

In 1961 they moved to Bremerton, where Jack began working at the shipyard. In 1966, Helen obtained a position as supervisor in the trust department of Seattle First National Bank, commuting to Seattle every day. In 1980, she retired from Seafirst and took another position with John Hancock selling mutual funds from their Bremerton branch.
Helen retired from the corporate world for good in 1989. She and Jack spent their retirement years taking many trips in their camper, spending winter months in Borrego Springs, California, traveling to Hawaii, Mexico and Europe. In 2011, Jack and Helen moved to Canterbury Manor. Helen became an active participant in the Canterbury community, attending resident meetings, writing for the newsletter and enjoying all the fun events and excursions Canterbury offered.
Helen was a life-long learner and always ready for a new experience. She had a guitar lesson scheduled on the day of her passing. She was often at her computer, researching and writing. Helen gifted her grandchildren with a memory book containing family genealogy including many stories of her childhood as well as stories passed down through the generations.
Helen is survived by her husband of 68 years, Wilfred (Jack) Larson; sons Jack Larson (Nan) of Virginia, Wade Larson (Carla) of Silverdale, Washington, and daughter Helen (Arlene) Work (David) of Seabeck, Washington; grandchildren Emily O’Halloran (TJ), Matt Larson, Justin Juneau, Julian Kohlbrand (Adam) and Carlee Brown (David); five great-grandchildren; and a brother, Bill Morgan of Twisp. Helen was preceded in death by her parents, two sisters and a brother.
A family memorial will be held later in the summer at the Sullivan Cemetery in Winthrop. A celebration of life was held for her many friends at Canterbury Manor. Online memorial is at www.lewischapel.com.
