BURR REEVE ABBE, son of Alanson and Eliza Woodruff (Barnes) Abbe, born in the town of Litchfield, Conn., November 20, 1830; died in Hartford, Conn., March 13, 1897, where he had been a broker and banker for thirty years.
He was educated at Yale College, M.D. 1854; studied medicine and in his earlier days was a great traveler, having lived at times in China, India, Egypt, California, and in Paris and other European cities.
Married (1) July, 1855, ELIZABETH SWIFT NYE. She died April 4, 1863, on board the ship "Viscount Canning" in the China Sea. She was on her way home from China with her two children on the ship "Hotspur" when it was wrecked. After nine days in an open boat she was rescued by a Chinese junk but died at sea as a result of the exposure.
Married (2) August 16, 1865, JULIA ARNOLD JONES, born March 29, 1839, daughter of Reverend Elisha Cowles and Julia (Chappell) Jones of Southington, Conn. She resides in Brockton, Mass.
