Former Salida resident Scott Willis Surber, 43, of Tatum, N.M., died Oct. 2, 2012, in Lubbock, Texas.

He was born June 4, 1969, in Salida to Willis I. and Jane L. (Wells) Surber.

He was a 1987 graduate of Sangre de Cristo High School in Mosca, where he played football and basketball and participated in track.

In 2001 he married Tamara Dawn Swaim at the Surber family ranch in Salida.

Mr. Surber worked for Carl Wagner Art Studio in Salida before becoming a sheriff’s deputy in Chaffee County.

He was a volunteer fire fighter for Poncha Springs and a correctional officer in Lovington, N.M.

Mr. Surber enjoyed cooking for friends and family. He was always in charge of the Christmas morning breakfast.

He also enjoyed hunting with his brothers, nephews and family friends.

He loved bowling, and when he won a trip to Las Vegas, he took his parents, grandmother, brother, sister-in-law, sister and brother-in-law with him.

Mr. Surber was the first resident of Hooper to own and master the Atari video game “Space Invaders.”

Facebook became a big part of his downtime.

After moving to Tatum, he became part of a large extended family of community residents, cooking for and playing cards with them.

He was preceded in death by his grandparents, Frank and June Surber and Wilbur and Inez Wells; and a sister, Gina (Surber) Curtis.

Survivors include his wife; parents; brothers, Keith (Darlene) Surber, Allen (Katie) Surber and Mario Surber, all of Salida, Kevin (Robin) Surber of Cañon City and Leonard (Brandy) Surber of Panama, Fla.; and sisters, Terry (Steve) Hamilton of Monte Vista, Danielle (Trey) Camp of Elk Heart, Texas, and Gale (Vince) Martinez and Patti Sloan, both of Salida.

A celebration of his life will be held at 1 p.m. Oct. 20, 2012, at the Salida Elks Lodge, 148 E. Second St.
