A trip to the mailbox ended in tragedy Monday as a five year old boy was killed when he stepped into the path of an automobile near here.
The victim was Lavon Grimes, son of Mr. & Mrs. Albert Grimes, who live four miles North of Tupelo on highway 45.
Highway patrolmen Tommy Rogers and Guy Hovis, said the boy was returning from the mailbox when he was hit.
Mrs. Grimes was standing on the porch and saw the car coming as her son walked back across the highway.
"She screamed and tried to get him to get back across the highway, but it was too late," the patrolmen said.
William A Johns Jr, 51, of Corinth, Ms., was the driver of the car.
Mr. Johns took the boy to Tupelo community hospital, where he died at 1:30 pm.
Patrolman Rogers said the accident was unavoidable and no charges will be filed.
